The Marvels of Hydroponics
You dream of planting vegetables but the biggest problem is you do not have space for that. The Ngee Ann Polytechnic School of Engineering is currently working on a technology that will allow you to plant vegetables without the need for a bigger space. Mechanical engineering students are developing a concept that will allow growing of vegetables inside the home.
The students are polishing their concept of “hygrobox”. This is a hydroponics system. The vegetables/plants will be stored in a cabinet. The cabinet is the size of refrigerator. If you are curious about hydroponics in general, you can refer to the following information:
- Meaning of hydroponics: Hydroponics is a Latin word which means “working water”. Hydroponics caught the spotlight because it seeks to grow plants without using soil. The plants can get crucial nutrients using the water supply.
- Nature of hydroponics: It was mentioned earlier that hydroponics does not need soil. You do not need a plough or shovel to plant and harvest your crops. This makes hydroponics reasonable and more convenient. After years of research, scientists found a way to plant seeds using plastic tubes, soil-like materials and chemicals.
- Methods of hydroponics: There are many methods of hydroponic gardening these days. Scientists and farmers are continuously experimenting and developing different methods to find out which method works for them.
The system can be of great help. If you are interested, you should watch out for its availability in the market. Meanwhile, you can visit the NP Open House which will start on January 9, 2014. The showcase will end on January 11, 2014. The hydroponics is joined by other projects like a device that can fend off thieves of laptops and mechanical arm for stroke patients.
