Medical Updates on Diabetes

Not all Singaporeans are concerned about their health. In fact, there are others who do not consider screening because they do not feel sick or they fear. Regardless, we have to realize that overall health and wellness is important if we want to live long and happy.

There is a study steered by Asian Diabetes Foundation. The results are surprising. Here’s what we need to know about the study:

  • Patients: For two years (from 2012 to 2014), the foundation studied three hundred nineteen patients. These patients are from different parts of Asia such as Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Vietnam, India and Taiwan.

  • The findings: The study was concentrated on patients with type-2 diabetes. The results showed that 3 in 10 patients here had diabetes before they turn 40 years old. Furthermore, the study revealed that younger patients performed poorly in terms of cholesterol management, glucose control and hypertension compared to older patients.
  • The aftermath: With this finding, doctors said that it is time for a new drug – Janumet XR. Health Sciences Authority approved the drug in 2013 to help type-2 diabetes patients in maintaining their blood sugar level. Presently, patients necessitate multiple drugs to regulate their sugar level. The Janumet XR will regulate the glucose levels of patients in one dose.

There are more than four hundred thousand patients with type-2 diabetes here. For these people, glycaemic control is a challenge. We have to get screened every now and then so we will know the status of our health especially that diabetes has no symptoms.
